PREFACE.
The Parish of AInham is situated in the north-west of
Northumberland, and the village, which is small and straggling,
lies within eight miles of the Scottish border.
The census returns for the Parish give the following partic-
ulars of its population : —

In mediaeval times AInham was a place of some importance,
and possessed a tower of which the foundations can still be
traced. Later, the village suffered considerably from the ravages
of the Scots, and was burnt down by these neighbours on
October loth, 1532. The present Vicarage contains a tower
mentioned in the Surveys of 1416 and 1542. The Church,
dedicated to St. Michael, is of the transitional period ; and has
some interesting features.
All the early Parish Registers have disappeared, the earliest
in existence being of comparatively recent date. A terrier, dated
1663, is amongst the Church books.
In the present transcript, where an entry is illegible, or
where there is no entry at all, the Editor has indicated it by
[blank]f and where any doubt as to the name existed, by a query.
The letters lie. in the Marriage Registers indicate that the
Marriage was solemnized by License : where this does not occur
it was in all cases performed after the Publication of Banns.
It is well to remind readers that previous to 1752 the year
began on the 25th of March, instead of, as now, on the ist of
January.
